Nytol TV Advert
The Aardman TV advert
Aardman Animations, the company responsible for Wallace and Gromit, have created a TV ad for Nytol featuring Joan, a housewife who suffers from occasional sleeplessness.
It took around a day to animate 2 seconds of film, with the final living room scene proving particularly difficult due to the need to animate four characters, a cat and the sofa at the same time.
Take a look for yourself.
Other interesting facts
The artists were able to create different shades of plasticine by blending existing colours together through a pasta machine.
Sometimes the action in the commercial is acted out by the crew and filmed for the animator to use as a basis for making the characters move in a more realistic way.
An entire world in miniature was created for the ad. Pillows, a sofa and toothpaste are just some of the everyday items which were intricately designed and sculpted to make Joan’s house seem as real as possible. The hardest part was keeping the miniature cat away from the miniature cookies!
Each second of film contains 25 frames of animation. The more frames, the more realistic the characters will act.
The lips of each character had to be moved in time with the voice track. This is done by breaking the track down frame by frame.
