FAQs

There’s no need to worry about the unknowns when it comes to using Nytol. We’ll tell you everything you need to know and make sure that you have one less thing to worry about when you’re trying to get to sleep.

What does Nytol contain and how does it work?

There are a variety of different Nytol aids to suit your needs, all are designed to help you get a good night’s sleep:

Nytol Original and Nytol One-A-Night contain a commonly used antihistamine called diphenhydramine hydrochloride (trust us it’s easier to use than to say!) It works by blocking the normal actions of histamine, the chemical that stimulates arousal-promoting areas of the brain. This helps reduce alertness and promote that first drowsy stage of sleep, helping you to drift off into a restful, deeper sleep.

Nytol Herbal tablets are a traditional herbal sleeping aid containing a blend of herbal ingredients including hops, valerian and passion flower. All of these ingredients have traditionally been used for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Nytol Herbal Simply Sleep One-A-Night contains Valerian root extract, a natural active ingredient which has been used for decades to induce sleep and promote calmness.

Nytol Herbal Simply Sleep Calm & Elixir contains Valerian root extract, which is traditionally used to induce sleep and promote calm.

Is Nytol safe to use?

Whilst all medicines can have side effects, they’re approved on the basis of their quality, safety and efficacy. The active ingredients used in Nytol are no different and have been used for many decades. Nytol should be used in line with the instructions on pack.

Will I feel groggy the next day after taking Nytol?

A morning after effect is unlikely with a full night’s sleep (around 8 hours) and you should wake feeling refreshed. It’s important to use the product in line with the instructions on pack.

Will I get dependent on taking Nytol?

Sleep medicines that are available over the counter such as Nytol (Diphenhydramine) are used to treat occasional sleeplessness and dependency is unlikely to occur when used according to the instructions. If symptoms persist continuously for more than two weeks, visit your local pharmacist or GP to discuss further.

How fast does Nytol work?

Nytol Original and Nytol One-A-Night should be taken at least 20 mins before bed.

Nytol Herbal products should be taken 30 minutes – 1 hour before bed. Nytol Herbal products should be taken for 2-4 weeks continuously.

Nytol Anti-Snoring Throat Spray works immediately. Over time, repeated use may help improve the strength of your throat muscles for long-term snoring relief.

Can I take Nytol if I wake up in the middle of the night?

You can take Nytol during the night if you still have time to get a full night’s sleep (around 7- 8 hours). In general, it is best to take Nytol in line with the instructions on pack, before you go to bed.

Do I need a prescription?

All Nytol products can be bought over the counter or from the shop shelf, you do not require a prescription – just ask your pharmacist for Nytol.

Can I use more than one of the Nytol sleep aid products at once?

We wouldn’t recommend taking more than one product in the Nytol range at the same time – use the products in line with the instructions provided in the pack.

Where can I buy Nytol?

Nytol’s range of products can be picked up at all good stockists across the UK. Some of those lovely stockists are listed on our Where to Buy page, but if you’d like to keep it local then visit your nearest pharmacy for more advice.
